InfrastructureAIApproval

Infrastructure incident response

Receive an Alertmanager alert, collect Prometheus and Kubernetes evidence, ask an AI model for a constrained proposal, and require approval before changing a deployment.

This is an authored integration, not a built-in Kubernetes operator. It targets only the checkout Deployment in the default namespace. The model can propose restart or observe; it cannot choose a target, issue commands, or bypass approval.

Requirements and permissions

  • WOML and its supported Bun runtime.
  • A reachable Prometheus API with exactly one up{job="checkout"} series.
  • A Kubernetes API with a trusted TLS certificate. Use a dedicated service account whose Role permits only get and patch on the checkout Deployment in default; do not use cluster-admin credentials.
  • A configured model endpoint supporting the demonstrated chat-completions JSON-schema request. Other model APIs require adapting incident-ai.ts.
  • An Alertmanager receiver that can send a bearer token to WOML's /alerts webhook.
  • A configured Slack app and a private #infrastructure-approvals channel. Invite the app to that channel and follow the Slack setup documentation before activating the workflow.

Keep all files in one folder. Store the service URLs, model identifier, and credentials using WOML secrets. Never put credential values in source.

Terminal
woml secrets set ALERT_WEBHOOK_TOKEN
woml secrets set PROMETHEUS_URL
woml secrets set PROMETHEUS_TOKEN
woml secrets set KUBERNETES_URL
woml secrets set KUBERNETES_TOKEN
woml secrets set LLM_ENDPOINT
woml secrets set LLM_API_KEY
woml secrets set LLM_MODEL
woml secrets set SLACK_BOT_TOKEN
woml secrets set SLACK_APP_TOKEN

PROMETHEUS_URL and KUBERNETES_URL are API base URLs; LLM_ENDPOINT is the full chat-completions URL. Use credentials scoped to this example and protect the runtime state, network, and backups.

Validate and run

Terminal
woml check incident-response.woml
woml run incident-response.woml

Configure an Alertmanager webhook receiver with bearer authorization using the same value as ALERT_WEBHOOK_TOKEN. Use max_alerts: 1, send_resolved: false, and a route matching namespace="default" and deployment="checkout". Every firing alert must carry those labels. Adapt routing and ingress authentication for your actual network; WOML does not configure Alertmanager or your cluster for you.

Review the evidence and approve or reject through the Slack message delivered to #infrastructure-approvals. Restrict channel membership to authorized reviewers and keep credentials and approval capabilities private. Do not expose WOML administration publicly.

What happens

  1. The webhook validates the target and firing status.
  2. Independent steps collect monitoring and Deployment status.
  3. The AI module returns only an action and explanation.
  4. The workflow allows restart only when the selected monitoring target is down and the Deployment has fewer ready replicas than requested.
  5. Human approval is mandatory for the patch. Rejection and timeout leave the workload unchanged. After approval, a fresh check must still satisfy the restart condition; otherwise execution stops before applying a patch.
  6. The approved patch changes a pod-template annotation, initiating a rollout. Reusing the incident's start time makes repeated identical patches converge on the same annotation.
  7. Verification checks the returned generation, ready replicas, and the monitoring result. A failed check throws; the configured retry policy permits further attempts. Exhausted verification fails the run, rather than claiming recovery.

A restart is not a universal remediation. Restrict this policy to incidents for which a restart is appropriate. A healthy target, invalid model proposal, missing metric, unavailable API, rejected decision, or failed verification must not be presented as a successful recovery.

Model proposals are advisory. The model does not receive cluster credentials. Do not accept arbitrary commands, URLs, target names, or patch bodies from the model or alert annotations.

If a managed external effect has an uncertain outcome, inspect the run and the actual Deployment before retrying manually. This example does not promise automatic rollback or exactly-once cluster changes.

The integration uses the Prometheus instant-query API, Alertmanager webhook receiver configuration, and Kubernetes Deployment rollout behavior. Configure these services separately before running the example.
