Classify documents and route them automatically
Receive a document event, classify and summarize it with an LLM, validate the result in JavaScript, and store the accepted record. Publish a new event so other workflows can continue the process.
The ordinary path needs no operator: a recognized category with confidence at or above 0.85 is accepted under the example policy. Unknown categories or lower-confidence results wait for human approval. A rejected or timed-out review stores a quarantined record and does not publish the accepted-document event.
Model confidence is a routing hint, not proof of correctness. Choose thresholds and review policies appropriate to your data. The model cannot choose a database, execute code, or change the workflow.
Requirements
- WOML and its supported Bun runtime.
- A chat-completions-compatible model endpoint supporting the demonstrated JSON Schema response format. Adapt the request for other model APIs.
- Permission to send the document text to your selected model provider.
- A writable project directory for the application-owned SQLite database.

</woml>The event schema validates input before a run is created. The LLM returns data only; the next step checks its category, summary, and confidence again before the workflow chooses a route.
The approval has no notification provider configured. Use the documented human approval surface, or add a supported notification destination when deploying the workflow.
Publish a sample document
Save this as publish-document.woml:
<woml>
<workflow id="publish-document" name="Publish a sample document">
<triggers><manual id="publish" /></triggers>
<steps>
<step id="sendDocument" name="Publish the document event">

return services.events.emit("document.received", {

text: "Invoice INV-2041 for USD 250, due in 30 days."
}, { name: "publish-sample-document" });
</script>
</step>
</steps>
</workflow>
</woml>Configure and run
Store the complete model endpoint URL, API key, and model identifier in WOML secrets. The request format and selected model must support the structured output used above.
woml secrets set LLM_ENDPOINT
woml secrets set LLM_API_KEY
woml secrets set LLM_MODEL
woml check intelligent-document-pipeline.woml publish-document.woml
woml run intelligent-document-pipeline.woml publish-document.womlPress Enter to publish the sample document. WOML processes the event, calls your model, applies the routing policy, and writes the record to document-ledger.sqlite.
Repeated publications can call the model again and update the same document record. Add application-specific deduplication if repeated classification is undesirable.
Continue with another workflow
Load an additional workflow with an <event name="document.classified"> trigger to react to accepted documents. Subscribers validate and admit independently; publishing the event does not wait for them to finish. Inspect the accepted and rejected subscriber counts returned by the final step.
The database stores summaries and classifications, not the full source text. Protect the database and runtime history, and apply the model provider’s data-handling policy before processing sensitive documents.
